April 26, 1895, Little Italy, New York, New York. Maria Barbella, a twenty-two year old Italian immigrant who worked in a sweatshop, is angry with her boyfriend, Domenico Cataldo. He’d promised to marry her, but was now reneging and leaving out of New York harbor on a boat back to Italy. She followed him to a saloon and begged, but when he told her only a pig would marry her, Maria was done and Domenico was dead. This is the story of Maria Barbella.
